I wish I could find the story about how New York City Ship Captains would take night time dinner cruises up the Hudson for the passengers to see the forest fire the Indians would set to clear overgrown forests.
Later studies show they seemed to have it down to a science.
They would wait for the right time of year for winds and moisture.
They would pick the valleys based on wind directions as well as the need for clearing.
They were careful that the fires would not “bleed over” into neighboring valleys.
