Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica,Sicily near Syracuse

About the necropolis of Pantalica that was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 2005 - Location:Region of Sicily near Syracuse - The Necropolis of Pantalica contains over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock;
we know only the last used as a necropolis. how do we know when the site is started if everything has been destroyed by subsequent installations?
The site seems much, much older than it appears....
